WWE SmackDown vs RAW 2008 featuring ECW is the ninth edition of the long-running WWE SmackDown vs. Raw (later renamed to WWE) game series based on the professional wrestling promotion World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Each wrestler now has two fighting style categories, one primary and one secondary. Each fighting style has its advantages and disadvantages in each particular match type. There are eight styles altogether: high-flyer, hardcore, submission art, powerhouse, showman, brawler, dirty and technical.[5][6] In addition, creative manager of THQ Cory Ledesma stated early in production that he planned on having numerous wrestler animations redone.

WWE SmackDown vs RAW 2008 featuring ECW (M5) lets players take the fight into their own hands with the debut of Superstar Fighting Styles. The game features eight unique styles, each having its own strategy and exclusive attributes. A brand new Struggle Submission System gives players intuitive and natural control over their WWE Superstars by using the game's popular analog controls. Realism and strategy are at the forefront, as players now control the amount of pressure they apply to their opponents.

WWE SmackDown vs RAW 2006 is the sequel to 2004's WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw and was succeeded by WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007 in 2006. The main focus of the game is to bring more realism and authenticity to the series with many new features, breaking away from the arcade-like gameplay that earlier games in the SmackDown! series possessed. As well as the addition of the new Buried Alive and Fulfill Your Fantasy matches, the game also included two new modes: General Manager and Create-An-Entrance.

WWE wrestling action returns in WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2006. WWE SmackDown vs RAW 2006 now includes momentum and stamina systems to make matches feel more authentic and require more strategy. You can play through an expanded season mode that provides two full seasons without story repetition. The game also features 100 different match types, a 3D locker room, and new wrestlers.

This installment of the Smackdown series continues the Smackdown vs. Raw era, which now uses a yearly date in the title, similarly to other sports titles. WWE SmackDown vs RAW 2006 (M5) includes an updated roster of wrestlers, as well as many classic superstars like Bret Hart or British Bulldog. It also includes many new arenas from recent Pay-Per-Views, as well as a classic arena from Wrestlemania 9. A new recorded dialogue for many of the wrestlers is featured in the storyline, as the player goes through many different plots in the Season Mode, chasing the championship belts.

WWE SmackDown vs RAW 2009 featuring ECW is based on the professional wrestling promotion, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), and is named after the promotion's two brands, Raw and SmackDown. The game introduced a few key new features including the Inferno match, a revamped tag team match, and four new game modes: Create-a-Finisher, Road to WrestleMania, Career and multiplayer season.

The Road to WrestleMania (RTWM) mode debuted in WWE SmackDown vs RAW 2009 featuring ECW (M5), replacing the popular Season mode from previous games. It was then featured in every new game in the series, before it was removed for WWE '13. This mode allows the player to play through personalized storylines for John Cena, Triple H, The Undertaker, Chris Jericho, CM Punk, and a tag team storyline for Batista and Rey Mysterio.

The Smackdown vs. Raw series continues with the 2009 edition. WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2009 featuring ECW features improvements on the tag team action, including a new Hot-Tag mode, tag team finishers, and new actions to help in the match. As with the previous game, the roster includes over 60 superstars from Smackdown, Raw and ECW. To keep the roster up-to-date, the game includes a roster editor allowing players to change the superstars on it, as well as change their appearance from face to heel. However, this is also the first game in the Smackdown series since Here Comes the Pain not to feature any legends.
